Microgreens to start your growing experience

Are microgreens easy to grow?

Yes, microgreens are generally easy to grow, which makes them a popular choice for beginners. Here's why they are considered easy to grow:

  • Quick Growth: Microgreens have a short growth cycle compared to full-grown plants. Most microgreens are ready to harvest within 1 to 3 weeks after planting, depending on the variety. This quick turnaround time means you can enjoy your homegrown microgreens relatively soon.

  • Limited Space Requirements: Microgreens can be grown in small spaces, such as a windowsill, balcony, or countertop. You don't need a large garden or outdoor space to grow them, making them suitable for urban dwellers and those with limited space.

  • Low Maintenance: Microgreens don't require extensive care. They are less susceptible to pests and diseases compared to mature plants, and their short growth cycle means you won't need to invest a lot of time in their care. However they are still plants, so you need to take care of them on the daily basis, and know the basic rules of growing to avoid mold or other diseases

  • Minimal Equipment: You don't need a lot of specialized equipment to grow microgreens. Basic supplies such as containers, soil, water and light sources (like a sunny window or a simple grow light) are usually sufficient.

  • Variety of Growing Mediums: Microgreens can be grown in various growing mediums, including potting soil, coconut coir, vermiculite, and even on paper towels. This flexibility allows you to choose a growing medium that suits your preferences and resources. PRO TIP: Please do not use the soil straight from the field- it is not clean enough to grow microgreen on it.

  • Indoor Growing: Since microgreens are harvested at a young stage, they can be grown indoors year-round, regardless of the weather conditions outside.

  • Experimentation: Growing microgreens is an excellent way to experiment with different plant varieties and flavors. You can try growing a variety of microgreens to find your favorites.

How to start growing microgreens?

To get started with growing microgreens, follow these basic steps:

  1. Choose Seeds: Select the type of microgreens you want to grow. Common options include Arugula, Radishes, Sunflower, Mizuna, Mustards, Broccoli, or Pea shoots. Seeds for microgreens needs to be fresh, stored appropriately, good quality and as high sprouting ratio as possible. Ordering seeds from MP SEEDS you can be sure that you have all above.

  2. Soaking (if needed): Some seeds benefit from soaking before planting. Refer to seed packaging or gardening resources to determine if soaking is necessary for the specific seeds you're using

  3. Sow Seeds: Scatter the seeds evenly over the surface of the growing medium. Gently press them down into the medium without burying them too deeply.

  4. Blackout Period: Place a tray or another container over the planted seeds to create a blackout period. This encourages the seeds to germinate by providing darkness and humidity. Remove the cover once the seeds have germinated enough.
  5. Provide Light: Place the container in a well ventilated location with adequate sunlight or use a grow light. Microgreens require good light to grow well.

  6. Watering: Water the seeds with water to keep the growing medium moist. Avoid overwatering, and spraying from above as it can lead to mold growth.

  7. Harvesting: Once the microgreens have developed their first true leaves and reached a desirable height (usually 1 to 3 inches), you can harvest them by cutting just above the soil line.

Overall, growing microgreens can be a rewarding and relatively easy gardening project, allowing you to enjoy fresh and nutritious greens in a short amount of time.
