General Informations about Lettuce, Brune D’Hiver Hydroponic Seeds

Brune D’Hiver is a classic French heirloom butterhead lettuce, known for its beautiful bronze-tinged leaves, excellent cold tolerance, and naturally sweet, mild flavour. These hydro-tested seeds perform exceptionally well in NFT, Ebb&Flow, DWC and Kratky systems, forming compact, tender heads ideal for premium salad mixes and all-season hydroponic production.

Taste and Look of Lettuce Brune D’Hiver

Brune D’Hiver forms a compact rosette head with tender, buttery leaves. The outer leaves display a beautiful reddish-brown blush, while the inner layers remain bright green, giving the plant a distinctive two-tone look.

The flavour is mild, sweet and pleasantly crisp, without bitterness. Many growers describe it as “buttery” and “juicy,” making it particularly popular in gourmet kitchens and French-style salads.

How to Grow Lettuce Brune D’Hiver (Hydroponic)

Recommended systems: NFT, Ebb&Flow, Kratky (also suitable for DWC)
Required nutrient solution: MP SEEDS Hydroponic A+B

Brune D’Hiver is compact and well-suited for dense hydroponic spacing. Follow this simple growing plan:

1. Prepare the growing cubes

  • Use rockwool, peat pellets, fibre cubes, or another inert seed plug.

  • Place in a seedling tray for stability.

  • Moisten with water or a very light nutrient solution (EC near 0) and let excess drain.

2. Sow the seeds

  • Place 1 seed per cube.

  • Lightly press or mist to secure the seed in place.

3. Sprouting (3–5 days)

  • Keep the tray in a dark, warm, humid environment.

  • Ideal germination temperature: 18–24°C.

  • Brune D’Hiver can germinate even in cooler conditions, but warming speeds up sprouting.

4. Move under light

  • Move seedlings under LEDs once sprouts appear.

  • Provide 14–16 hours of light daily.

  • Maintain even moisture in the cubes — avoid soaking.

5. Seedling development

Seedlings are ready to transplant when:

  • they show 2–3 true leaves,

  • roots grow from the bottom of the cube.

6. Transfer to the final system

  • NFT: ensure root tips reach the nutrient film.

  • Ebb&Flow: place in trays with regular flood cycles.

  • DWC/Kratky: keep a small air gap under the cube for oxygen access.

7. Growing & harvest

Maintain stable light, airflow, pH and EC (1.0–1.5).
Brune D’Hiver typically reaches full hydroponic harvest in 40–45 days after transplanting, forming compact bronze-kissed heads with excellent texture.

How to Use Brune D’Hiver Lettuce

  • Fresh salads: Perfect base for gourmet salads; the bronze and green tones add visual appeal.

  • Sandwiches & wraps: Soft, foldable leaves with gentle crunch make it ideal for burgers, sandwiches, and lettuce wraps.

  • Warm dishes: Can be lightly wilted into soups or warm dishes at the end of cooking.

  • Plating & garnish: Great for cheese boards, appetizers, and decorative plating.

  • Mixed greens: Adds sweetness and colour contrast to premium salad mixes.

Its mild sweetness and buttery texture pair well with vinaigrettes, citrus dressings, goat cheese, roasted nuts, pears, apples, and beets.
